Best time to travel from Jeddah to Makkah

  • Quietest: early mornings on weekdays.

  • The last few kilometres: traffic around the Haram builds up before and after prayers, so the final stretch can take longer than expected.
  • Summer: daytime temperatures are very high — an air-conditioned car and travelling early or late make the trip much more comfortable.

Driving yourself from Jeddah to Makkah

If you rent a car in Jeddah, keep in mind:

  • Traffic drives on the right, and speed cameras are common on the highways — stick to the posted limits.
  • Parking near the Haram is very limited; many drivers use the large car parks on the edge of the central area and continue by bus or taxi.
  • Some roads around the Haram close to private cars at prayer times and in peak seasons.
  • Navigation apps work well, but road layouts near the Haram change often during projects — follow the signs.

For most visitors, especially on a first trip, a driver who knows the drop-off points is less stressful than driving and parking yourself.
